I. Promises of the New Covenant

A. Old vs New Covenant

1. (Heb. 8:6 NLT) God relates to mankind based on covenant.  A covenant is an agreement cut between two or more parties.  The Bible is divided into two covenants or testaments: Old (Law) and New (Grace)

a. Old Covenant – Law

~Under the OT, man is blessed or cursed based on his obedience in keeping perfectly ALL of the Law inwardly and outwardly.

~(Exo. 20) – Ten Commandments “You shall’s…”

~(Deut. 28:1, 2, 15) blessings based on obedience

~Sins remembered to 3rd & 4th generation. (ref. Exo. 20:5)

~1st question – (Gen. 3:9) God asking, where is man?

~Last words of OT – (Mal. 4:6b)

  b. New Covenant – Grace

~Under the NT man is blessed based on Jesus’ obedience in perfectly keeping the Law.

~(Heb. 8:7-13) “…I will’s…”

~(Eph. 1:3) Every blessing in Christ!

~Sins remembered no more. (ref. Heb. 8:12)

~1st question – (Matt. 2:2) Man asking, where is Jesus?

~Last words of NT – (Rev. 22:21)

2. (John 1:17) Law/Moses; Grace and Truth/Jesus

a. Moses 1st miracle turning water into blood resulting in death. (ref. Exo. 7:20)

Jesus 1st miracle turning water into wine resulting in celebration and joy. (ref. John 2)

b. 50 days after the 1st Passover God gave Moses the Law on the 1st Pentecost – 3000 people died. (ref. Exo. 32)

50 after Jesus hung on the cross on the Passover, on the day of Pentecost – 3000 people get saved. (ref. Acts 2)

3. Grace gives life but the law kills.

a. (Rom. 4:13-16 NLT) the promise of the inheritance received through righteousness of faith and not the law.

b. (Gal. 3:9-14 NLT) righteousness by works of the law brings the curse.

~(Gal. 2:21 NLT)

~(Gal. 5:4 NLT)

c. (2 Cor. 3:6, 9 NLT) the law is the ministry of death.
