I. The Faith of Abraham
A. Faith Grows through Relationship with God
1. (Rom. 4:3) Abraham believed God and was declared righteous, but so was Lot. (2 Pet. 2:7-8)
2. (Heb. 7:18-19; 10:16-22 all NIV) Abraham and Lot are examples of righteousness by faith: Abraham developed relationship with God through righteousness by faith, but Lot did not.
a. (Gen. 12:7-8) Abram builds altars of worship
b. (Gen. 12:11-17) Abram lies about Sarai
~Yet in Abram’s failure God still blesses him.
c. (Gen. 13:2-6) Abram returns to the altar
~Abram/Lot separate because of strife
~(v14-18) God speaks to Abram and he builds an altar
d. (Gen. 14:10-16 NIV) Lot is taken captive in Sodom and Gomorrah. Abram recovers him and his stuff.
~(v18-20 NIV) Abram tithes
e. (Gen. 15:1-6) Abram doubts so God makes covenant with him.
f. (ref. Gen. 16) tell Abram/Hagar story
~(Gen. 16:15-17:1)13 silent years
g. (ref. Gen. 17) tell story of how God changed Abram/Sarai names to Abraham/Sarah
h. (Gen. 18:1-8, 22-23) Jesus and two angels visit Abraham.
i. (Gen. 19:1-3) Just the two angels visit Lot
~(v8) Lot offers men of city his daughters
~(v14-20) angels drag Lot and family out of city
~(v26) Lot’s wife turned into pillar of salt
~(v30-38) both daughters get Lot drunk and sleep with him to have a child. (Moab, Ammon)
3. Lot never built an altar, never tithed and didn’t serve.
