A. Overcoming Temptations
1. (ref. 1 Cor. 10:1-13) 5 things that caused the children of Israel to die in the wilderness. (1 Cor. 10:13-14 AMP)
#1 Lusted after evil things.
#2 Became idolaters.
#3 Sexual immoralities.
#4 Tempted Christ
#5 Complaining
2.(ref. Deut. 8:1-5 NIV) The purpose of the wilderness:
#1 To humble you
#2 To test you
#3 To show you the true condition of your heart
#4 To see whether you would keep His word or not
#5 To show you that you cannot live by natural means alone but by the word of God.
3.The process of testing in the wilderness:(i.e. raising kids)
a. Three parties involved in the test:
~God and what He’s doing.
~Satan and what he’s doing and allowed to do.
~You and how you respond.
b. The process:
#1 God gives us promises and principles.
#2 God withdraws His manifested presence or our conscious awareness of His presence.
#3 Satan comes and tempts us:
~He baits our self-life or pride
~Tempts us with sin, our fleshly weaknesses
#4 God waits to see what we will do. Will we walk by faith, stand on the word or walk by the flesh or sight? Will we do what He says or disobey?
~(ref. 2 Chron. 32:24-31 Hezekiah)
c. (Jas. 1:2-8, 13-15 all KJV) tests and temptations
~(1 John 2:16) 3 areas of temptation: (1) the lust of the flesh, (2) the lust of the eyes, and (3) the pride of life.
4. Overcoming Temptations: Adam vs. Jesus
a.Adam: promise/principle
~Be fruitful, multiply and have dominion
~Don’t eat of the tree of knowledge
b. (Gen. 3:1-11) Adam fails the test.
c. Jesus: promise/principle:
~This is My Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.
d. (Matt. 4:1-11) Jesus stands on the Word and passes the tests.
